The allure of gold captivated medieval patrons; they valued its rarity, craved its untarnished beauty and appreciated its malleability. Goldsmiths and mosaicists, ivory and stone carvers, manuscript illuminators and panel painters alike employed this precious material to convey earthly power and the promise of heavenly riches. We will explore the wealth of golden and gilded artefacts that survive from the Middle Ages.
