The Rebuilding of the Town of Ypres by Christopher Chanter
In his lecture, our speaker will show old photographs of this beautiful city (including the famous Cloth Hall, a World Heritage Site), taken before the First World War, and compare them with shots taken of the same buildings after the bombings and almost total destruction. His own recent photographs will depict Ypres today and illustrate how it has risen from the ashes. Some important buildings were rebuilt exactly as they were before, but most of the town has a more modern look. Before-and-after pictures are always fascinating and will very poignantly demonstrate the changing fortunes of this ancient city.
